Open tab · what side income really keeps
Small charges don't burn bright. They smoulder.
Cinder Tab is a small reference for people adding a second, smaller income to a full-time job. We don't sell courses, tools or coaching. Most talk about side income is about what comes in. We keep a running tab of what quietly goes out, so you can see what you actually keep.
The tab
A thousand in. Six hundred and ten kept.
None of the charges on this tab is large. A platform fee, a payout fee, one subscription, some postage, a phone top-up. Each looks reasonable on its own. Added up with the tax share, they take almost four in every ten units that came in.
That's not a reason to avoid side work. It's a reason to keep the tab open from the first week, so you judge the work by what you keep rather than by what you were paid.
Where it smoulders
Common costs by kind of side work.
We leave amounts out on purpose: fees and prices vary too much by country and platform to print honestly. Check each one for your own situation.
| Work | Per job or sale | Monthly | Easy to forget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelance writing or design | Platform commission | Software subscriptions | Payout and currency conversion fees |
| Reselling online | Listing and sale fees | Shop or promotion plans | Packaging, trips to the post office, returns |
| Online tutoring | Booking platform share | Video or scheduling tools | Materials, a better microphone |
| Local services and deliveries | App commission | Insurance where required | Fuel, wear on a bike or car, phone data |
| Handmade goods | Marketplace fees | Stock of materials | Unsold items and photography time |
Smoke signals
Other things worth checking early.
- FEES
The rate isn't what arrives.
Platforms and payment services keep a share. Read the fee page before you start.
- TAX
Small amounts still count.
Side income is usually taxable. Keep a plain record from the first payment and check your tax authority's rules.
- CONTRACT
Your employer may have a say.
Some employment contracts limit outside or competing work. Read yours and ask HR about anything unclear.
- FRAUD
Offers that cost you to start.
Anyone asking for a fee, a kit purchase or help moving money isn't offering work. Walk away and report it.
