When people compare side work, they usually compare what it pays. What it costs is harder to see, because it comes in small pieces spread across the month.
Fees
Most platforms take a share of each job or sale. Payment services may charge again when you withdraw, and again if currency is converted. Read every fee page before your first job.
Subscriptions
Design apps, scheduling tools, storage, promoted listings. Each is easy to justify for one month and easy to forget for the next six.
Physical costs
- Packaging and postage
- Fuel, transport, wear on a bike or car
- Phone data, ink, small equipment
Tax
Side income is usually taxable. Treat a share of every payment as already spent, and check your tax authority's guidance for how much.
