Money
What you keep, not what you're paid
Two side jobs can pay the same and leave very different amounts behind. The number worth comparing is what you keep.
The calculation
- Start with everything received in the month
- Take away every fee, subscription and physical cost
- Take away the tax share
- What's left is what you kept
Then divide by hours
Divide what you kept by all the hours spent, including messages, admin and travel. That's your real hourly figure.
Compare like with like
When choosing between two kinds of work, compare their kept-per-hour figures, not their advertised rates. The lower advertised rate sometimes leaves more behind.
